When Ross tells Macduff that his family has been “Savagely slaughtered” Macduff is to draw his sword and stick it into the ground at his feet. This is a sign of anger and a promise for revenge. His sword should be simple and heavy. As opposed to Duncan’s jeweled one, Macduff’s sword will be build for killing.
